Amazon compra un centro de datos suministrado con energía nuclear

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made a strategic acquisition, buying a data center that is directly supplied by a nuclear power plant. nuclear power plant . The transaction, valued at $650 million, was made with Talen Energy and centers on a data center linked to one of the largest nuclear power plants in the United States.

About the new AWS data center

Located in Pennsylvania, the Cumulus Data data center owned by Talen Energy is adjacent to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant, which has an installed capacity of nearly 2,500 MW. Amazon plans to expand this facility to reach a capacity of 960 MW.

Mac McFarland, president and CEO of Talen, expressed his satisfaction with the sale of the Cumulus data campus, noting the significant value generated for Talen. “This transaction not only provides an attractive return on our initial investment in Cumulus, but also underscores our commitment to the sale of clean, carbon-free energy from the Susquehanna nuclear power plant.“said McFarland.

The company has committed to increase its power consumption in 120 MW increments over several years, with the option to limit this commitment to 480 MW. In addition, the company has two optional 10-year extensions, which are conditional on the renewal of the nuclear operating license.

As part of this agreement, Talen will also provide power to Amazon through a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA), originating directly from the Susquehanna nuclear power plant.

Amazon’s investment in a nuclear-powered data center not only reflects the growing demand for more sustainable data storage solutions, but also marks a milestone in the integration of nuclear power into cutting-edge technology infrastructure. This move could encourage other technology companies to consider clean and sustainable energy sources, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.
