A sinkhole near the town of Tierra Amarilla in Chile has caused alarm among the population, as since its appearance on July 30, it has doubled in size, extending to 50 meters wide and 200 meters deep.

Investigators said last week that they are still studying the huge hole near the Alcaparrosa copper mine; operated by Canada’s Lundin Mining, about 665 km north of Santiago.

The local authorities ordered a halt to work at the mine and the geology and mining service indicated that it was initiating a “sanctioning process”.

Lundin said last week that the huge circular crater did not affect workers or community members and that it was investigating to determine the cause.

Lundin owns 80% of the property and the remainder is held by Japanese companies Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd and Sumitomo Corp.
