First approvals for public testing of advanced autonomous driving in China

The Chinese government's decision is based on a national plan implemented in November 2023.

The large Asian country has authorized a group of automakers, including BYD, Nio, Changan Automobile, GAC and SAIC, to conduct public road tests of vehicles with advanced autonomous driving technology. This initiative seeks to promote the massive adoption of this type of vehicle and driving style in the country.

The commitment to advanced autonomous driving

The tests will involve fleet operators such as ride-sharing companies, and will focus on technologies for autonomous driving level 3, which translates to drivers being able to take their hands off the wheel in certain conditions. However, the responsibility for safety will remain with the automakers and fleet operators.

The Chinese government’s decision is based on a national plan implemented in November 2023, which aims to accelerate the integration of autonomous vehicles in the country. It is hoped that this testing phase will pave the way for the full-scale commercialization of more advanced autonomous driving technologies.

Other automakers, such as Huawei, Xpeng and Tesla, offer Level 2 autonomous driving systems in the Chinese market. Tesla plans to launch its“Full Self-Driving(FSD) software in the country within the next year, a system that although it does not reach level 5 of full autonomy, it approaches a future where autonomous vehicles are an everyday reality.
