On July 19, ABS and KRISO, the Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering announced a collaboration to advance commercial ship propulsion using small modular reactors and the creation of floating SMR power generation platforms.

ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) will be responsible for analyzing the applicable regulatory regulations and international standards relevant to the design of SMR-powered vessels. This analysis will include a comprehensive review of the safety guidelines and technical requirements to be met by these innovative propulsion systems.

KRISO, on the other hand, will focus on developing fundamental technologies for SMR-powered ships. This will include the development of conceptual designs for both ship and propulsion systems, as well as developing a comprehensive framework for nuclear and maritime safety analysis. KRISO will also be responsible for the design of a floating SMR power generation platform, an nuclear power plant at sea that will enable the stable supply of energy to island regions in the future.

ABS and KRISO lead the way in marine nuclear energy

Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer, highlighted the importance of this collaboration by stating: “ABS is leading the way in supporting nuclear power projects in the maritime industry thanks to our knowledge of international regulations and the development of class-related safety requirements. We are proud to apply our expertise to these research projects with KRISO. With the increased focus on zero carbon emissions, modern nuclear technologies offer the potential for decarbonization in many areas of the sector ”.

For his part, Keyyong Hong, president of KRISOunderlined his institution’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.Through this joint research with ABS, we will lead the development of future green marine technologies and set global standards for SMR commercialization in the marine sector. This will position us as a leader in the global market for nuclear-powered vessels in the future. ”.
