The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) approved an immediate 13% increase in LNG (liquefied natural gas) exports from the Plaquemines LNG terminal, operated by Venture Global in Louisiana.

With this authorization, Plaquemines LNG will be able to export up to 450 million additional cubic feet per day to destinations without free trade agreements (FTAs), which will raise its total export capacity to 3,850 million cubic feet per day.

Plaquemines LNG Grows as a Hub for Global Energy Supply

Located in Louisiana, Plaquemines LNG began its exports in December 2024 and has shown accelerated growth, currently exceeding 3 billion cubic feet exported daily. With this new approval, the terminal will further expand its presence in international markets, especially among countries not associated with the United States by trade treaties.

Official Statements

The announcement was confirmed by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who highlighted the significance of the moment:

We will see a significant increase in U.S. LNG export capacity at Plaquemines immediately, and other facilities will begin operations in the coming weeks and months.

Chris Wright, Secretary of Energy.

For his part, Kyle Haustveit, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the DOE’s Office of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy, stated:

Our mission to provide secure, reliable, and affordable energy has never been more important than it is now. I am pleased that the Department of Energy can take this step to make an immediate difference and contribute to increasing the global supply of LNG.

Kyle Haustveit, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy.

Outlook for the LNG Industry

With other facilities set to come online in the coming months, the measure represents a clear signal of the federal government’s commitment to energy expansion. Venture Global is positioning itself as one of the leading companies in this drive, consolidating Plaquemines LNG as a key node in the U.S. LNG export network.
