India’s diesel exports to Southeast Asia reached their highest level in more than seven years in March, driven by the reshaping of global energy trade following the conflict in the Middle East.

Diesel exports driven by the geopolitical conflict

According to maritime transport data and analysis firms such as Kpler, diesel flows from India exceeded 1 million metric tons in March, with Singapore among the main destinations.

This increase is due to the disruption of crude supply from the Middle East, which forced Asian buyers to seek more stable alternatives. In this context, India has consolidated its role as a key supplier in the regional energy market.

India gains prominence in the Asian energy market

In addition, Indian refineries have taken advantage of the favorable pricing environment in Asia. The availability of prompt-delivery Russian crude has enabled them to maintain high production levels and improve spot sales margins.

Reliance Industries, operator of the world’s largest refining complex, accounted for nearly 90% of the shipments recorded on this trade route, underscoring its strategic weight in the supply of refined products.

Changes in global fuel trade

On the other hand, reduced exports from China and other Northeast Asian countries have intensified demand for Indian diesel. Likewise, the narrowing of price differentials between eastern and western markets has supported the redirection of cargoes toward Asia.

Industry analysts note that as long as the spread remains below $40 per ton, it will continue to be attractive to ship product east of the Suez Canal.

Short-term outlook

Looking ahead to the coming months, specialists expect this trend to continue. Even with the reinstatement of export taxes by the Indian government, arbitrage conditions and regional demand could sustain flows through mid-year.

Likewise, the flexible stance of the United States regarding Russian and Iranian crude exports has helped stabilize the market and facilitate supply for Indian refineries.

Overall, these factors reflect a reshaping of global energy trade, with India strengthening its position as a key player in supplying diesel to Asia.
