Technology Development Center in Cubillos del Sil and I can confirm that the completion of the vanadium flow battery tests marks a before and after in our electrical backup capacity. This breakthrough allows the City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN) to manage an ecosystem where solar generation and mass storage converge to power the industry of tomorrow.
Integration of vanadium flow battery technologies
From my professional perspective, the real value of this project lies in the intelligence with which three different storage chemistries have been hybridized. The recent addition of the vanadium flow system, implemented by CYMI with H2 Inc. technology, is in addition to the sodium sulfur and lithium-ion assets already in operation. This combination provides a total capacity of 15 MWh, allowing to fully absorb the production of the 2.2 MWp photovoltaic plant. In addition, the versatility of vanadium guarantees a service life of more than two decades, thanks to its ability to decouple power and energy through electrolyte tanks.
The facility has two specialized electrolyzers, a polymer membrane and a high temperature solid oxide electrolyzer. This technical configuration enables demonstration-scale R&D&I testing, providing critical data for heavy industry to move away from fossil fuels. The support of the Next Generation EU funds has been fundamental to materialize this platform that offers more than 15 hours of autonomy, placing the province of León on the global map of energy innovation.
Finally, it is imperative to emphasize that this unique hybrid system facilitates the stability of the power grid by acting as an energy lung. The 6.4 million euro investment in the vanadium module represents not only an infrastructure expenditure, but also a commitment to European technological sovereignty. By extrapolating the optimal operating conditions in these facilities, Spain is leading the way towards an industrial model where green hydrogen and sustainable fuels are no longer a promise but an operational and profitable reality.
