  • Wind damage during AST construction

Posted by Rafael Rengifo on November 12, 2024 at 5:58 pm

Recently Becht posted in LinkedIn a training advertising referring to AST damaged by wind during construction / Post | Feed | LinkedIn.

We got one comment referring to the European standard EEMUA 159 previsions to avoid wind damage. Based on this scenario I would like to ask few questions to the group:

    1. Are you implementing wind damage mitigations all the time before wind girders are installed?

    2. Do you consider tank erection location in your decision to implement wind damage mitigations?

    3. Have you ever reacted to upcoming inclement weather by implementing quick mitigations? – if so, what have you done?

    4. Any lesson learned to share on how effectively and efficiently mitigate wind damage during AST construction?

During construction you are generally reliant on your fabricator to have adequate bracing planned during assembly. In areas with higher risk of wind events, tornados, and hurricanes it is a good idea to review their assembly plans to ensure they have adequate protection against wind damage.
