Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group, a China-based company primarily engaged in coal production and chemical sales, has launched one of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects.
This facility, located in the Ningxia region, has managed to start up a huge 150 MW alkaline electrolyser powered by 200 MW solar panels.
The electrolyser splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, and Baofeng claims it is the world’s largest hydrogen electrolyser.
The objective of this facility, which will start operating at the end of 2021, is to reduce the large amounts of coal that the company needs. It has required an investment of close to 200 million euros and is expected to produce 160 million standard cubic meters of hydrogen per year.
The group claims that, at full capacity, it can generate up to 27,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, estimates that some experts say are too optimistic.
The facility will be able to reduce coal use by 254,000 tons, which will reduce CO₂ emissions by 445,000 tons per year, according to project director Wang Qirong.
