From the Cartagena Refinery, Ecopetrol began delivering a marine fuel enriched with 2% biodiesel to wholesale distributors in the Colombian region. This initiative responds to the growing need to adopt more environmentally friendly energy sources and the company’s commitment to sustainability. In addition to its renewable component, the blend includes an additive that ensures optimum performance in boat engines.

Likewise, the integration of this blend in marine diesel translates into a reduction of the carbon footprint, with a projected reduction of approximately 27 thousand tons of fossil CO2e per year. This figure is equivalent to the preservation of 153 hectares of tropical dry forest.

The company’s move is aligned with the international goals of the International Maritime Organization for 2030 and 2050. In this way, Colombia establishes itself as a regional benchmark in the adoption of measures for greener shipping.

In addition, the Colombian oil company, which supplies the total domestic demand for marine diesel and part of the market for international ships, has extended this practice to the entire country. After deliveries in the Pacific, now the complete supply of marine fuel in Colombia will include the sustainable component.

This advance adds to the company’s other developments, such as jet and diesel co-processed with renewable raw materials, reaffirming its path towards the production of more sustainable fuels and the country’s energy transition.
