Toyota Motor Europe has begun operating five heavy-duty trucks equipped with hydrogen fuel cell technology in its logistics network. The deployment includes key routes in Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands, in collaboration with Dutch manufacturer VDL Groep.
Hydrogen trucks mark new phase of transportation
These vehicles, developed on DAF platforms modified by VDL, incorporate fuel cell modules designed by Toyota. modules designed by Toyota. With a load capacity of up to 40 tons of up to 40 tonsthe trucks offer up to 400 kilometers of range per refueling, making them suitable for real-world logistics routes between plants and distribution centers.
The new trucks run routes between Toyota’s Parts Center in Diest (Belgium) and logistics locations in Lille, Cologne, Rotterdam and Weesp. Toyota has brought on board key partners such as Vos Transport Group, CEVA Logistics, Groupe CAT and Yusen Logistics to operate these vehicles in real-life working conditions.
Commitment to logistics decarbonization
The program is part of Toyota’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality in its European logistics operations by 2040. In addition to eliminating exhaust emissions electric motors electric motors in these trucks reduce vibration and noise, improving both the driving experience and coexistence with local communities.
Toyota and its logistics operators will continuously evaluate the performance of the trucks in daily operations. The learnings will enable vehicle and process improvements, while driving the use of hydrogen as a key energy carrier in heavy-duty heavy haulage.
