According to a joint study by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the World Petroleum Council, 22% of the global oil companies’ workforce is female, a percentage that has remained stable since 2017.

This low participation of women in the oil sector continues to show no progress, despite the fact that oil and gas companies have increased the number of diversity and inclusion policies and initiatives by 50%.

The research was conducted on the basis of 50 companies with collective revenues of US$2 trillion. Additionally, more than 2,800 industry workers in 60 countries were surveyed, and 50 senior executives and other industry professionals were interviewed.

One of the results is that Latin America is one of the regions with the lowest participation of women in this sector, according to the study. It is one point below the global average, with 21% of the oil company workforce.

The Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions are even behind Latin America, with 8% and 15% respectively, as the least gender-equitable regions in the oil sector, despite being the regions with the highest crude oil production, with seven member countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Indonesia).

According to the BCG study, female representation is particularly low in leadership positions. In Latin America, the percentage of women in executive positions is only 9%.

However, Europe has seen the greatest improvement in gender equity since 2017. Women’s representation has increased from 24% to 33%, driven by greater interventions in Germany, the Netherlands, and other countries. In North America, participation improved from 20% to 23% in three years, and global companies advanced to 25% of the workforce from 24% in 2017. The only region that has seen a decline in women’s representation is Asia-Pacific, with a significant drop to 8% from 19%.
