High-speed connectivity is about to take a significant leap forward thanks to the innovative silicon photonic chip developed by Alphabet’s Taara division. This new chip uses light beams to deliver speeds of up to 20 Gbps without the need for cables, a perfect solution for remote or hard-to-reach areas where traditional fiber optic infrastructures are not viable.
What makes this photonic chip unique?
Unlike previous technologies that required complex mirror systems and bulky hardware to direct light, Taara’s chip is a fingernail-sized device that uses advanced software to steer, track and correct the light beam with unprecedented precision.
This design allows the chip to be much more compact, efficient and easy to install, with the ability to transmit data over distances of up to 20 kilometers.
Global impact on connectivity
The chip promises wireless internet in hard-to-reach places and also opens up new possibilities for applications such as autonomous vehicles , 4K video streaming and other AI-based solutions.
In addition, Taara technology operates in the optical spectrum, where bandwidth is virtually unlimited, solving congestion problems in traditional radio frequency networks.

The future of borderless connectivity
The chip is scheduled to be launched in 2026 , and although adoption is expected to be gradual, the potential to connect the 3 billion people who still do not have access to the internet is unquestionable.
With the help of this chip, Taara aims to provide network access in an affordable and efficient way, overcoming the limitations of current solutions such as Starlink .
