The US Navy has successfully completed acceptance testing of the HUGIN Superior autonomous underwater system, developed by Kongsberg Discovery . This autonomous underwater vehicle ( AUV ) has been evaluated by the Defense Innovation Unit ( DIU ) and has met all operational requirements.
A successful breakthrough for the HUGIN submarine
The submarine was delivered in record time, just one year after Kongsberg received the DIU contract for the supply of Large Diameter Unmanned Underwater Vehicles ( LDUUV ). Final testing was conducted in Norway, where the AUV’s ability to operate in challenging underwater environments was proven.
This system will provide an immediate operational advantage to the U.S. Navy, with applications in undersea warfare, intelligence of the operational environment ( IPoE ), and mine countermeasures ( MCM ). Additionally, the HUGIN Superior is capable of inspecting critical underwater infrastructure without the need for modifications.
HUGIN Superior is distinguished by its design for deep ocean exploration, with an endurance of more than 70 hours and a navigation accuracy of less than 0.04% of the distance traveled. In addition, it has an integration of acoustic sensors and advanced mapping systems that allow it to collect underwater data with exceptional quality.
We are excited to expand our relationship with the U.S. Navy and offer the cutting-edge capabilities that come standard with our HUGIN Superior AUV system. We applaud the DIU team for enabling this transfer of capability to the warfighter at an accelerated pace and look forward to receiving valuable feedback from operators and continuing to collaborate to further develop our product line.

Since its first dive in 1993, the HUGIN series has set the standard in the development of autonomous underwater vehicles. Models such as the HUGIN Endurance have demonstrated the ability to operate on extended missions, cementing Kongsberg’s reputation in the industry. This new achievement reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement of its underwater technologies.
