Last Thursday, 13th February, HMS Halland , the last of the Gotlands class submarines, was launched following an intermediate modification. This upgrade includes advanced systems and cutting-edge technologies, some of which will be implemented in future Blekinge class submarines ( A26 ).

Saab leads the modernization of the HMS Halland submarine

Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona was the venue for this important event. Saab, recognised as a leader in defence technology, was responsible for upgrading more than twenty key systems on HMS Halland, including sensors and control systems. These advances increase the submarine’s manoeuvrability, while enhancing security in the Baltic Sea, one of the most geopolitically sensitive regions.

Protecting critical submarine infrastructure and shipping lanes is more important today than ever before. The launch of HMS Halland is a testament to Saab’s ability to upgrade and deliver advanced submarines with the capabilities the Swedish Navy requires. With HMS Halland, the Swedish Navy, and by extension NATO as well, gains more firepower to defend and police the Baltic Sea.

Mats Wicksell, head of Saab’s Kockums business area.

The Swedish Navy , together with NATO , directly benefits from this modernisation. Submarines such as HMS Halland are very important in the defence and surveillance of the Baltic waters, where the ability to operate covertly and withstand extreme sea conditions is essential. Furthermore, the modernisation ensures that the submarine maintains its ability to perform missions in a context of high security and international competition.
