Norwegian remotely operated vehicle ( ROV ) specialist Kystdesign has signed an agreement with the Royal Netherlands Institute for Marine Research (NIOZ) for the manufacturing of the advanced ROV Supporter 6000. The contract was sealed by the directors of both organisations, Han Dolman and Tore Nedland and the delivery of the vehicle is scheduled for June 2026.

An ROV for extreme exploration

The Supporter 6000 has been designed to perform operations in ultra-deep waters , reaching depths of up to 6,000 meters . It is a state-of-the-art tool that will combine autonomy, precision and versatility, equipped with six high-resolution cameras, 41 electrical connectors and 24 proportional hydraulic functions, allowing interfacing with sensors, tools and other underwater cameras.

In addition, the control system will incorporate advanced features such as AutoPOS and AutoTRACK, facilitating navigation and maneuverability in extreme environments.

According to Gert-Jan Reichart, head of NIOZ ‘s Ocean Systems department, the Supporter 6000 will transform the way Dutch scientists carry out ocean exploration.

The robot is equipped to do human work at great depths. With its six high-resolution cameras and strong gripping arms, it forms our eyes and arms underwater.

Innovation in ocean research

The vehicle will be integrated into the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse, the new flagship of the Netherlands’ research fleet. Thanks to its cutting-edge technology, it will enable live experiments in the deep sea , including the study of ocean ecosystems and the interaction between species using techniques such as the use of isotopic tracers.

Kystdesign director Tore Nedland highlighted the importance of the project and said that he and his team feel honored to have been chosen to develop this tool for underwater research.

The contract with NIOZ represents a strategic expansion for Kystdesign, consolidating its presence in the field of ocean research and reinforcing its commitment to the development of advanced subsea technology.
