SSE Renewables, APG and TenneT sign agreement to connect Jmuiden wind farm See Alpha

The signing of the implementation agreement seeks to connect the IJmuiden Ver Alpha wind farm to the offshore grid, under the alliance between SSE Renewables , APG and TenneT , where it will allow this 2GW wind farm to be integrated into the Dutch electricity system.

The wind farm will be located 60 kilometres from the coast and will be the first to be connected to the grid under the new 2GW direct current standard. This model allows for reducing losses in electricity transmission , improving energy efficiency and minimising the environmental impact on the marine ecosystem. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2029 and will generate enough electricity to supply up to three times the consumption of Amsterdam.

The connection infrastructure, developed by TenneT , will enable the energy generated at the park to reach land in Borssele , where it will be converted into alternating current for distribution on the high-voltage grid. This approach facilitates the integration of renewable energy into the Dutch electricity system, while reducing the need for additional platforms and cables , optimising the use of space in the North Sea.

The alliance between SSE Renewables and APG has designed a comprehensive plan of environmental measures, in collaboration with the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre , to mitigate any possible impact on marine fauna and encourage habitat regeneration in the area.

The Dutch government aims to achieve an installed capacity of 21GW of offshore wind energy by 2032 , and IJmuiden Ver Alpha will be a key pillar in this strategy. This project demonstrates that it is possible to advance the energy transition with innovative solutions, efficiency in electrical transmission and respect for biodiversity.
