UK prioritises nuclear safety with ‘plutonium immobilisation’ at Sellafield

With this decision, the United Kingdom is improving the management of nuclear waste, while at the same time promoting economic and technological development in the region.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority ( NDA ) has backed the UK Government’s decision to immobilise the separated plutonium for civil use currently stored at the Sellafield facility. The main aim of this measure is to minimise the risks associated with the radioactive material and ensure its long-term management using advanced technologies.

The initiative and implementation of plutonium immobilization

Immobilisation involves transforming plutonium into ceramic or rock-like materials, a stable form that reduces its toxicity and makes it difficult to reuse inappropriately. This process is considered the most efficient according to technical and economic analyses by the NDA, representing a step forward in the management of nuclear waste in the United Kingdom. In addition, Sellafield, known for its experience in handling radioactive materials since the 1940s, will play a central role in this initiative.

The scheme also promises to revitalise Cumbria’s economy. The construction of a nuclear processing plant and interim storage facility at Sellafield will require a multi-million pound investment that will create thousands of jobs during the construction and operation phases. David Peattie, chief executive of the NDA, said the project will open up new opportunities in sectors such as research, engineering and infrastructure development.

While these initiatives are underway, the plutonium will remain safely stored in purpose-built facilities. In parallel, work will be done on planning a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF), which will ensure the permanent disposal of the material under controlled conditions. Although the GDF will not be operational before 2050, immobilization represents a decisive step towards a definitive solution.

Sellafield Chief Executive Euan Hutton stressed that this decision puts Sellafield at the heart of the national nuclear decommissioning strategy. Through its experience and collaboration with the NDA , Nuclear Waste Services and the National Nuclear Laboratory , it will establish itself as a model of excellence in nuclear management worldwide.
