The three battery energy storage ( BESS ) projects of the Oasis 1 consortium reached financial close in November 2024. These projects are led by EDF Group in collaboration with Mulilo , Pele Green Energy and Gibb-Crede .

The Oasis 1 scheme comprises three facilities: Mookodi , Aggeneis and Nieuwehoop , a combined totalling 257 MW of capacity and total storage of 1,028 MWh. These plants are designed to meet the flexibility needs of South Africa’s electricity system, operating under 15-year power purchase agreements with Eskom , the state-owned electricity company.
With an investment of R7 billion, financed by Standard Bank of South Africa and ABSA , the projects seek to improve the stability of the network, and benefit local communities through a trust that ensures a 5% stake in each project.
EDF Group , known for its commitment to clean energy, operates four wind farms in South Africa and is developing additional hybrid and solar power projects. EDF Vice President Beatrice Buffon said: “ These storage systems mitigate grid constraints, and are also critical to South Africa’s energy transition .”
The Oasis 1 projects , awarded under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s BESIPPPP Programme , underline the importance of international collaboration in fostering sustainable energy solutions in Africa.
Storage systems , such as Oasis 1, point towards a more resilient and low-carbon energy model. By addressing energy deficits and facilitating the integration of renewable sources, progress is being made towards a safer and more sustainable infrastructure, aligned with global climate objectives.
