Austin Engineering Limited has taken a significant step forward by making the first export of its Armadillo bucket for electric excavators . This high-performance product is destined for a major copper mining company in the United States and is expected to arrive before the end of October.

If the on-site tests are successful, the company could order more units.

This is the fourth shipment since the acquisition of Mainetec in 2022, which has allowed Austin to expand its bucket offering globally. Two units have already been delivered in Australia, while a third bucket is being manufactured at the company’s facility in Chile for a South American customer.

About the Austin Armadillo Ladle

Weighing between 80 and 90 tonnes , the Armadillo bucket has been designed to be lighter than previous models, requiring less steel in its construction. This translates into a higher loading capacity and improved filling efficiency, making it a cost-effective option for mining operations .

In addition, it is equipped with the innovative iTrip door control system, which has been proven to reduce maintenance intervals and increase productivity .

Excavator buckets are valuable commodities, with a price tag ranging from $1.5 million to $2.5 million . This first export to the U.S. market marks a significant achievement for Austin, which sees great growth potential in North and South America. The company currently estimates that there are about 430 excavators in those regions that could benefit from this technology .

Austin CEO David Singleton noted that the bucket was designed in Australia and manufactured in Indonesia, highlighting the company’s ability to operate globally. With operations in Chile and the United States , the company is well positioned to expand its presence in key markets and meet growing demand for its high-performance buckets.
