Yinson Renewables’ Matarani solar plant has officially started operating in Peru. With a capacity of 97 MWp, this project, located near Arequipa, promises to be a key driver in renewable energy generation in the country. Since July 2024, the plant is already exporting and selling energy to the market , positioning Yinson as the second largest solar generator in Peru.

This project will supply clean energy to approximately 62,000 Peruvian homes per year and will significantly contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions . With an estimated production of 260 GWh per year, the emission of more than 56,000 tons of CO₂ will be avoided, thus helping to mitigate the country’s environmental impact.

Yinson expands its solar plant in Peru

The plant has 150,000 solar panels installed on an area of 750,000 square meters. This project has been carried out under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Orygen, the largest renewable energy producer in Peru, backed by the sustainable infrastructure investment fund Actis.

David Brunt, CEO of Yinson Renewables, highlighted that this achievement marks the company’s entry into the Latin American market. He further stated that the Matarani plant is just the beginning, as Yinson has plans to continue expanding in the region, with additional projects totalling almost 1 GW of solar power over the next five years . In Peru, the company also owns the 130 MWp Majes project, construction of which is set to begin in late 2024.

Yinson acquired the Matarani project from Grenergy Renewables in early 2024, and has relied on the company to build, operate and maintain the project for the first two years. Matarani becomes Yinson’s fourth large-scale project, adding to its operations in India.
