Mitsui O.S.K. Lines(MOL) and Vale International announce major advances in marine propulsion technology with the installation of two Norsepower Rotor Sails on a 200,000-ton Capesize bulk carrier. This vessel will carry iron ore, under a medium-term contract with Vale, and becomes the first bulk carrier of its kind to use this technology.

The installation of these 35-meter-high, 5-meter-diameter sails is aimed at reducing fuel consumption and pollutant gas emissions by up to 10% on routes between Brazil and the Far East. This modernization is part of the joint efforts of MOL and Vale to move towards a cleaner and more sustainable maritime operation.

MOL has integrated this innovation into its“Environmental Vision 2.2“, whose objective is to achieve net zero GHG emissions emissions by 2050. The introduction of energy-saving technologies, such as rotor sails, sets a greener and more environmentally responsible path.

For its part, Vale, committed to the goals of the Paris Agreement and the reduction of emissions in its value chain, has incorporated these technologies in its Ecoshipping program. Since 2018, the company has led energy efficiency and fleet modernization initiatives, including the operation of Valemaxes and Guaibamaxes, some of the most efficient vessels in the world.

This modernized Capesize bulk carrier made its first call at Ponta da Madeira, Brazil, marking the beginning of a new era in sustainable shipping. MOL and Vale continue to work together to ensure the efficient transportation of iron ore and contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions in the industry.
