Major scheduled maintenance and refurbishment of the Neste refinery in Porvoo, Finland, has been successfully completed. This achievement allows us to continue refining crude oil, as well as renewable and circular feedstocks, producing more than 100 different products for global customers.
The renovation of the Neste refinery
Neste has decided to cut the maintenance interval maintenance interval from five years. The new cycle will now be comprised of two and a half to three years. This planning change is not directly linked to the transformation of the Porvoo refinery, but it facilitates the implementation of the investments needed to move the program forward, according to Markku Korvenranta, executive vice president of Neste’s petroleum products business unit.
In addition, regulatory inspections and maintenance work has been performed on approximately 5,000 pieces of equipment, along with asset improvement initiatives at the Porvoo refinery, activities that cannot be executed while the refinery is operational.
During this major maintenance, the Porvoo refinery became one of the largest construction projects in Finland. There was a participation of around 7,600 people, completing more than 1.4 million hours of work. The main investment for this recovery in 2024 amounted to more than US$430 million, approximately.
Continuity of service
Product deliveries to Neste’s customers were not affected by the renovation work. Likewise, the port of Kilpilahti in Porvoo and the refinery’s distribution terminal operated normally throughout the maintenance process.
