The Norwegian Offshore Directorate has granted Equinor authorization to drill an exploration well in the Barents Sea. This operation will be carried out using the Transocean Enabler semi-submersible platform.
The permit granted is specifically for exploration well 7220/2-2, located in production license 1080. This license allows Equinor to act as operatorwith a 50% shareholding, in partnership with Vår Energi (30%) and Petoro (20%). This license will remain in effect until February 14, 2027.
A good opportunity for Equinor
All drilling operations will be conducted using the Transocean Enabler semi-submersible rig, designed specifically for harsh environments. The new wildcat exploration well will not be a challenge for this experienced platform.
Importantly, the Transocean Enabler platform, with a GVA 4000 NCS design, was built by DSME Shipyard in 2016. This rig has the capability to operate in water depths of up to 500 meters and reach a maximum drilling depth of 8,500 meters.
April 2023, Transocean secured a contract for 19 wells in Norway with Equinor for the Transocean Enabler platform. At that time, the rate was US$377,000 per day, adjusted for foreign exchange, with the option for eight additional wells.
