From Houston, Texas during the ASNT 2023 annual conference, Richard Blaser from Inspenet had the pleasure of interviewing Shane Walton, the general manager of the University of Ultrasonics, demonstrating that ultrasonic training is an essential piece of the nondestructive testing world.
History and Location
Founded in 2004 by Mark Davis, the University of Ultrasonics was originally based in Birmingham, Alabama. However, around 2015, they moved to the Clear Lake area of Houston, near NASA.
Unique Educational Approach
From UT Level 1 to advanced trainings such as Phased Array and TOF, the University of Ultrasonics has established itself as a leading ultrasonic training institution. In addition to these programs, they also offer consulting services for key sectors such as aerospace and oil and gas.
Online vs. classroom training
Shane stresses that ultrasonic training has two key components: theory and practical skills. While the theory can be delivered online, the practical skills are essential to be acquired in person. However, they have incorporated online content to meet the needs of those who cannot travel to Houston.
University of Ultrasonics’ Next Generation Challenge
With the rise of technology, many young people are entering the ultrasound field. However, Shane emphasizes the need for this generation to build basic practical skills, which in many cases are being overshadowed by technological advancement.
