The International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) 2024 conference continues to be a hub for industry advancements and networking. On the second day of the event, Lance Watson, Vice President at A.R. Watson, shared his extensive experience and the company’s innovative tank lifting and moving solutions in a detailed interview with Inspenet.
A.R. Watson: Lifting & Moving Above-Ground Storage Tanks
Watson began. A.R. Watson specializes in lifting and moving above-ground storage tanks to rebuild tank foundations and apply flexible finishes. “We use airbag technology from the Netherlands that can lift about 96 tons each,” he explained, highlighting the company’s ability to lift entire tanks without dismantling them.
Watson elaborated on the logistics involved in moving tanks. “We can move tanks onto barges and transport them over long distances. For instance, my father once moved a tank over 500 miles from Auckland to Gisborne in New Zealand,” he recounted, illustrating the company’s capabilities and historical success.
The Challenge of Long-Distance Transport: A.R. Watson’s Alaska Project
Currently, A.R. Watson is working on a significant project involving the transportation of two tanks and a building module from Vancouver, Washington, to Cape Lisburne, Alaska. “This project will take approximately five weeks,” Watson noted, emphasizing the meticulous planning and execution involved in such operations. Watson also discussed the environmental benefits of their work. “We lift tanks to remediate issues like leaks or soil contamination. We often install liners to protect the environment before placing the tank back on a solid foundation,” he said. A well-maintained tank on a solid foundation can last 50 to 60 years, he added.
