The American company Boeing will soon build the Sustainable Flight Demonstrator, an aircraft developed together with the US space agency (NASA) with innovative design and technology that will serve as a model for future commercial aviation.<\/p>\n\n
With the Demonstrator, NASA hopes to reduce by up to 30% the fuel consumption and emissions of narrow-body aircraft – a single aisle – frequently destined to cover national routes.<\/p>\n\n
“We used to think of NASA as a space agency, an aviation agency, but NASA is also a climate agency,” agency administrator Bill Nelson told the media.<\/p>\n\n
Nelson said the Boeing design is a full-scale demonstration aircraft of the braced transonic wing type (a construction process in which girders are placed obliquely to secure a frame) and is expected to be able to fly by 2028. This will bring the United States closer to reaching the government’s goal of zero emissions in the aviation industry by 2050.<\/p>\n\n
In a statement, Boeing explained that it will integrate elements of existing vehicles with entirely new components in the construction of the aircraft. \u201cUltra-thin, strut-braced wings, with longer spans and higher aspect ratios, could accommodate advanced propulsion systems currently limited by the lack of underwing space in low-wing aircraft configurations.\u201d the company explained.<\/p>\n\n
Boeing’s chief technology officer, Todd Citron, assured that these “ultra-thin” wings will increase the dynamic efficiency of the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n
