According to authorities, the refinery, which has a capacity of 140,000 barrels per day (b\/d), should be running at full capacity in August.<\/p>\n\n<p>They also indicated that the preliminary products include gasoline, kerosene and diesel, and that, to date, the first unit is for 70,000 b\/d from the refinery. They stressed that Karbala is Iraq&#8217;s first new refinery in decades.<\/p>\n\n<p>Importantly, it was due to start operating in 2018, but the project suffered delays due to pressure on Iraqi finances, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when oil prices fell.<\/p>\n\n<p>The authorities commented that the refinery will have the capacity to produce between 8 and 9 million liters a day (50,000-57,000 b\/d) of 95 octane gasoline. It is expected to increase to 12 million liters a day (75,000 b\/d) in the future.<\/p>\n\n<p>It was also revealed, according to the World Energy Trade web portal, that Karbala will cover 75% of Iraq&#8217;s national consumption of petroleum products.
