The University of Antofagasta, in Chile, through the Center for Advanced Research on Lithium and Industrial Minerals (Celimin), concluded the FIC-R project called Construction of lithium batteries via green processes, with a series of important scientific advances in the generation of new knowledge and patents.<\/p>\n\n

The director of the project, Dr. Mario Gr\u00e1geda Zegarra, pointed out in the closing seminar that the objectives set at the beginning were achieved, highlighting that it was divided into three stages.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe first comprised the development of an electrochemical process integrated into a solar module to obtain battery-grade lithium hydroxide (green process system). The second in the use of the LiOH precursor obtained in the previous stage, to produce cathodic active materials through a synthesis process and its application in lithium ion batteries. In addition, at this stage the scaling of the coin cell to the pouch cell was carried out\u201d, said the researcher.<\/p>\n\n

Dr. Gr\u00e1geda, who is also the director of Celimin, added that in the third stage “a lithium ion battery based on lithium iron phosphate with a capacity of 10 Ah was packaged, developing its management system in management and control of the battery (BMS)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n

The first two stages of the project gave rise to the granting of a patent in South Korea on the subject of cathode materials, and the patent application for processes for obtaining LiOH using membrane technology.<\/p>\n\n

As a result of the work carried out by Celimin, the University of Antofagasta recently signed a cooperation agreement with the company SQM, which commits the delivery of 2 million dollars for research and technological development.<\/p>\n\n
