In Cornwall, the United Kingdom\u2019s first large-scale geothermal plant<\/a><\/strong> is now operational. The facility, developed by Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL), generates steady clean energy thanks to heat stored more than 5,000 meters underground. This commissioning enables, for the first time, domestic electricity production from geothermal sources, independent of weather conditions. <\/p>\n\n

The plant located in United Downs will supply up to 3 MW of power, enough to provide electricity to around 10,000 homes. This constant, emissions-free energy has been secured through a long-term agreement by Octopus Energy, a key player in the country\u2019s renewable energy ecosystem. The collaboration ensures supply stability and strengthens the region\u2019s energy independence. <\/p>\n\n

Geothermal plant and low-carbon lithium<\/h2>\n\n

In addition to producing electricity, the plant has begun demonstration-scale extraction of low-carbon lithium. This mineral comes from geothermal brines with concentrations above 340 ppm, placing Cornwall among the locations with the highest extraction potential in the world. The lithium produced could be key for the EV battery<\/a><\/strong> industry. <\/p>\n\n

GEL plans to produce up to 10,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year by 2030. This amount would be enough to manufacture around 250,000 EV car batteries each year, covering approximately 65% of new registrations of this type of vehicle in the United Kingdom. The United Downs plant<\/a><\/strong> could become a strategic hub for the supply of critical minerals in Europe. <\/p>\n\n

Collaborations driving a new energy model<\/h2>\n\n

The project is backed by Kerogen Capital, Thrive Renewables, and Exergy ORC technology. These partnerships have made it possible to implement an innovative energy model that integrates sustainable power generation and the use of mineral resources<\/a><\/strong> at the same site. <\/p>\n\n

Bringing this plant into operation represents a decisive step toward diversifying the UK energy mix, while positioning the country as a responsible lithium producer amid growing global demand.<\/p>\n\n
