{"id":319661,"date":"2025-12-04T17:49:56","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T21:49:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/smast-studies-impact-of-wind-energy-on-commercial-fisheries\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T20:10:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T00:10:40","slug":"smast-studies-impact-of-wind-energy-on-commercial-fisheries","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/smast-studies-impact-of-wind-energy-on-commercial-fisheries\/","title":{"rendered":"SMAST studies impact of wind energy on commercial fisheries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology<\/strong><em>(SMAST<\/em>) has announced its collaboration with the <strong>New Bedford Port Authority<\/strong> on a new project entitled <em>&#8220;Tracking and Modeling the Behavior and Position of Fishing Vessels and their Trawl Gear in Wind Energy Zones.&#8221;<\/em> This effort gains support from a $419,462 grant awarded by the <strong>Massachusetts Clean Energy Center<\/strong> (MassCEC). <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The environmental impact of wind power on fisheries<\/h2>\n\n<p>This study will focus on analyzing how fishing vessels and their trawl gears operate in and around the areas of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/eirgrid-celebrates-key-breakthrough-in-offshore-wind-energy-in-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"316747\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offshore wind energy<\/a><\/strong>with the aim of better understanding the potential impacts of this industry on commercial fisheries. In addition, the project will seek to identify ways to support a safe and sustainable coexistence between the fishing and wind sectors. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>SMAST <\/strong>was selected as a strategic partner because of its relevant track record in collaborative fisheries research and its close relationships with the commercial fishing community.
