The project was commissioned by the Danish company Bigadan AS and aims to optimize the production of biomethane and inject it into the national grid, in line with the country’s goals for the energy transition.

Efficient technology aligned with the national grid

Located in Horsens, the plant will use the PuregasCA PuregasCA system from Wärtsilä, based on amine scrubbing technology. Amines are a chemical solution that acts as a “magnet” to “capture” CO₂ from raw biogas and produce pure methane, ie, biomethane.

The plant will be able to process 6000 Nm³ of raw biogas per hour and the plant is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2026.

What will be the impact of the biogas plant?

Biomethane is 100% renewable energy and injecting it into the grid will allow Denmark to drastically reduce its consumption of fossil natural gas. fossil natural gasimported from other countries. In addition, biogas is produced from waste, so it also helps to manage waste in a sustainable way.

In addition, biogas is the perfect complement to wind and solar power, because when there is no sun or wind, it can provide steady and stable power to the grid, making the overall energy system more reliable.

Forward-looking energy transition

Denmark continues to focus on sustainable models that integrate multiple renewable sources, and the announcement of this new biogas plant marks a step towards a cleaner, more efficient and resilient energy grid. The collaboration between Wärtsilä and Bigadan reinforces the role of biogas as a centerpiece in the decarbonization of the European energy system.

Source: Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä will build a biogas plant for Bigadan in Horsens, with amine technology and a capacity of 6000 Nm³/h.
