However, one of their biggest challenges has been instability at the interface between the solid electrolyte and the lithium anode, especially under cold climates or high currents. <\/p>\n\n<p>The problem lies in the fact that the traditional SEI interface, made up of inorganic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/polymers-and-macromolecules-types-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/articulo\/polimeros-y-macromoleculas-tipos-y-ejemplos\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inorganic materials<\/a><\/strong>tends to fracture during charge-discharge cycles, affecting ion transport and facilitating dendrite growth.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A plastic interface with graded properties<\/h2>\n\n<p>The team led by researchers from both universities proposed a plastic structure of SEI with a gradient of affinity and repellency towards lithium. This architecture allows for greater ductility, avoiding fractures during operation and maintaining an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/critical-minerals-in-energy-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/articulo\/minerales-criticos-transicion-energetica\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ionic conductivity<\/a><\/strong> conductivity. <\/p>\n\n<p>This new coating, in addition to being more mechanically stable, <strong>is capable of withstanding thousands of hours of continuous operation<\/strong> even at sub-zero temperatures, which represents a fundamental step forward for applications in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/study-reveals-electric-vehicles-equal-gasoline-and-diesel-vehicles-in-longevity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/la-longevidad-en-los-vehiculos-electricos\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electric vehicles<\/a><\/strong> in extreme climates.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Published in Nature and endorsed by national entities<\/h2>\n\n<p>The results were recently published in the journal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09675-8\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-025-09675-8\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature<\/a><\/strong>under the title<em>&#8220;A ductile solid electrolyte interface for solid-state batteries<\/em>&#8220;.
