{"id":308997,"date":"2025-10-23T14:13:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T18:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/jan-de-nul-unveils-the-worlds-largest-cable-laying-vessel\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T16:44:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T20:44:16","slug":"jan-de-nul-unveils-the-worlds-largest-cable-laying-vessel","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/jan-de-nul-unveils-the-worlds-largest-cable-laying-vessel\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan De Nul unveils the world&#8217;s largest cable-laying vessel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Jan De Nul<\/strong>, a Belgian maritime works giant, has launched the Fleeming Jenkin, the <strong>world&#8217;s largest cable-laying vessel<\/strong> with a <strong>cargo capacity of 28,000 tons.<\/strong> The vessel was launched into the water by flooding the dry dock of the CMHI Haimen shipyard in China, thus initiating the final phase of its construction prior to its delivery, scheduled for the <strong>second half of 2026<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A floating giant designed from the inside<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>Fleeming Jenkin<\/strong> was conceived entirely by Jan De Nul engineers and features <strong>three cable carousels<\/strong>, two above deck and one below deck, and a large fiber optic cable hold, allowing <strong>up to four cables<\/strong> to be <strong>laid simultaneously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The system allows for tensions of up to <strong>150 tons<\/strong> and operations at depths of up to <strong>3,000 meters.<\/strong> Thanks to these features, it can <strong>carry twice as much cable as any similar vessel today<\/strong>, allowing it to undertake longer voyages and larger projects without having to return to port to reload. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A green boat to install green infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/subsea-cable-installer-starts-operations-in-irish-offshore-wind-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cable-laying vessel<\/a><\/strong> also incorporates <strong>ultra-low emission technology (ULEv)<\/strong>, such as a dual exhaust filtration system, which removes up to <strong>99% of harmful particles<\/strong>, reducing <strong>nitrogen oxides (NOx)<\/strong> and complying with EURO VI regulations.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is also prepared to run on <strong>biofuels and <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/methanol-a-catalyst-for-energy-transition\/#toc_heading-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environmentally friendly methanol<\/a><\/strong>, and its <strong>hybrid electric propulsion<\/strong>, supported by a 2.5 MWh battery, allows optimized management of energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-1024x767.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-308883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-1024x767.webp 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-768x575.webp 768w, https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-1536x1151.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-2048x1534.webp 2048w, https:\/\/cdn.inspenet.com\/buque-cablero-fleeming-jenkin-jan-de-nul-vista-trasera-624x468.webp 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rear view of Jan De Nul&#8217;s Fleeming Jenkin cable-laying vessel at CMHI Haimen shipyard in China. Source: Jan De Nul <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What will be the ship&#8217;s first mission?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Once operational, the vessel will begin its first major task under the 2GW program. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jandenul.com\/projects\/export-cables-2gw-program-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2GW program of TenneT<\/a><\/strong>the Dutch and German power grid operator, in which it will install <strong>more than 2,800 kilometers of submarine cables<\/strong> to connect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/offshore-wind-farm-maintenance-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offshore wind farms<\/a><\/strong> to the onshore grid, a distance of more than <strong>700 kilometers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Each of these new connections will be capable of transmitting <strong>up to 2 gigawatts<\/strong>, more than double the capacity of current systems. This deployment will accelerate the integration of <strong>offshore wind power<\/strong> in Europe. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A fleet ready to connect continents<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Fleeming Jenkin will work alongside her sister ship, the <strong>William Thomson<\/strong>, forming the spearhead of Jan De Nul&#8217;s fleet for long distance interconnection projects.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Fleeming Jenkin combines all the cable installation expertise we have accumulated over the past fifteen years.
