{"id":304901,"date":"2025-10-06T16:12:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T20:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/inspection-work-announced-for-ikata-nuclear-power-plant\/"},"modified":"2025-10-08T10:05:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:05:03","slug":"inspection-work-announced-for-ikata-nuclear-power-plant","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/inspection-work-announced-for-ikata-nuclear-power-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspection work announced for Ikata nuclear power plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Japan&#8217;s Shikoku Electric Power <strong>will shut down Unit 3 of the Ikata power plant<\/strong>, one of the country&#8217;s few operating nuclear power plants, <strong>on October 11, 2025 for its 18th periodic inspection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the inspection works for the Ikata power plant?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The inspection at the Ikata nuclear power plant will begin with the <strong>shutdown of the 890 MW reactor on October 11<\/strong>, to address critical aspects of the nuclear infrastructure. <strong>Forty-four of the 157 fuel assemblies will be replaced<\/strong> with new uranium assemblies, as will the primary system valves, which are responsible for cooling the reactor in the event of a loss of coolant using water. <\/p>\n\n<p>The review of other reactor elements will also be carried out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yonden.co.jp\/press\/2025\/__icsFiles\/afieldfile\/2025\/10\/03\/pr003.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\n  <strong>other elements of the reactor will also be overhauled.<\/strong>\n<\/a>among which are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reactor body<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control and measurement equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measurement and control system installations  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radioactive waste disposal facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radiation control facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reactor containment facilities  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other facilities annexed to power reactors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Resumption of electrical transmission to the system is scheduled for <strong>December 25 of this year<\/strong> and the inspection is expected to be fully completed by <strong>January 19, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does this affect the power supply?<\/h2>\n\n<p>In the absence of the nuclear reactor, which is usually a cheap baseload power source, the company would normally be forced to <strong>increase output from its thermal power plants<\/strong>, which burn coal and <strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/liquefied-natural-gas-in-latin-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">liquefied natural gas (LNG)<\/a>\n<\/strong> to generate electricity. However, it is currently <strong>autumn<\/strong>, a season where demand for electricity is not as high as it is in summer, for air conditioning, and in winter, for heating. <\/p>\n\n<p>In addition, the Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts that this year&#8217;s <strong>autumn is warmer than normal<\/strong> in western Japan, where Shikoku Island is located, which means that people <strong>will use less heating<\/strong>, keeping electricity demand low. Therefore, the company is unlikely to increase the output of its <strong>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/turbine-from-central-thermal-power-plant-modesto-maranzana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermal power plants<\/a>\n<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the importance of the power plant for Shikoku Electric Power?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Ikata plant is <strong>the company&#8217;s only operating nuclear reactor<\/strong>, so its maintenance directly affects the regional energy supply.
