Google took a firm step towards continuous renewable energy storage by partnering with Italian firm Energy Dome. This alliance seeks to expand the use of carbon dioxide (CO2<\/sub>)-based batteries capable of storing clean energy. clean energy<\/a><\/strong> between 8 and 24 hours. <\/p>\n\n

The collaboration with Energy Dome<\/a><\/strong> reinforces Google’s commitment to clean, consistent energy, in line with its goal of operating with carbon-free electricity 24 hours a day by 2030.<\/p>\n\n

Lithium-ion batteries have so far been the main solution for managing the intermittency of solar power. solar and wind<\/a><\/strong> and wind power. However, their limited autonomy and high production costs pose challenges for a sustainable electricity supply. During times of excess renewable production, the system uses that energy to liquefyCO2.<\/sub> Then, when demand exceeds generation, the gas is released to generate electricity. This dynamic makes theCO2<\/sub> battery a reliable option for providing a constant and stable supply to power grids. <\/p>\n\n

Energy Dome already operates a 20 MW, 200 MWh plant in Italy and has agreements to expand to the United States and India. Its modularity allows it to adapt to different contexts, from urban grids to remote areas. <\/p>\n\n

According to LDES Council projections, mass deployment of long-life storage technologies could reach up to 8 TW by 2040, contributing to more efficient electrification and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Google seeks to accelerate this transition by incorporating advanced energy solutions that strengthen grid resilience and security of supply. <\/p>\n\n
