U.S.-based Fairbanks Morse Defense<\/strong> has been selected to supply an FM 175D engine<\/strong> as part of the DDG(X) program<\/strong>, the future surface destroyer of the U.S. Navy’s future surface destroyer<\/strong><\/a>. This engine will be integrated into the propulsion system land test site, with the objective of validating critical technologies prior to the ship’s construction phase. <\/p>\n\n

The FM 175D engine as a new generation platform<\/h2>\n\n

The FM 175D diesel generator<\/strong> was chosen for its relevant power-to-weight ratio and fuel efficiency. These specifications are vital for a platform that will have to power advanced sensors, combat systems and high-consumption propulsion solutions. With a generating capacity of 3.8 MW and an operating range between 1740 and 4400 kilowatts, the engine is designed for demanding naval environments. <\/p>\n\n

Moreover, the ground test site will allow the performance of the DDG(X) power system<\/strong> to be evaluated under controlled conditions, minimizing design risks prior to the start of platform construction. With an architecture based on an integrated power system<\/a>,<\/strong> the new destroyer will require more than 75 MW for full operation, including propulsion, sensors and armament. <\/p>\n\n

The launch of the FM 175D in the U.S. market in 2023 responded to the growing demand for compact and powerful systems in defense. In addition, its modular configuration<\/strong>, including 12-, 16- and 20-cylinder versions, makes it a flexible option for different applications. <\/p>\n\n

This DDG(X) program<\/strong> will progressively replace the Ticonderoga<\/strong> and Arleigh Burke-class<\/strong> ships<\/strong>, with the construction phase scheduled to begin in 2032. Ongoing work on engines such as the FM 175D is part of the Navy’s effort to ensure that core technology is ready to meet the demands of modern combat. <\/p>\n\n
