Phase 3 of Johan Sverdrup is underway<\/strong> with an investment of NOK 13 billion led by Equinor and its partners. This breakthrough represents one of the most important bets on the Norwegian continental shelf<\/a><\/strong> to secure energy supply and increase hydrocarbon recovery. <\/p>\n\n

Phase 3 production by Johan Sverdrup<\/h2>\n\n

Thanks to its onshore electrification, Johan Sverdrup is one of the lowest CO\u2082 emitting fields globally. Phase 3 seeks to increase its operational efficiency by installing new subsea templates at Kvits\u00f8y and Avaldsnes connected to existing infrastructure, which will allow an additional 40 to 50 million barrels of oil equivalent to be extracted. <\/p>\n\n

The planning of this phase included the use of use of artificial intelligence<\/a><\/strong> to define well trajectories and reservoir distribution, resulting in faster decision making and savings of SEK 130 million. This approach accelerates the planned commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2027. <\/p>\n\n

Strategic alliances for subsea development<\/h2>\n\n

TechnipFMC has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the subsea infrastructure in the amount of SEK 5.3 billion. Further tenders are scheduled in 2025 for drilling and platform outfitting. Eight wells will be drilled: seven production wells and one water injection well. <\/p>\n\n

In 2024 Johan Sverdrup reached record production of 260 million barrels<\/strong>. Today one out of every three barrels in Norway comes from this field. Equinor aims to increase the recovery rate from the current 66% to 75%, significantly above the Norwegian continental shelf average of 47%. <\/p>\n\n

A look at the future of energy in Europe<\/h2>\n\n

The project reinforces Norway’s leadership in efficient production and ensures a stable flow of energy to Europe. Phase 3 includes additional capacity for new wells and future tie-ins, positioning Johan Sverdrup<\/a><\/strong> as a key pillar of regional supply beyond 2035. <\/p>\n\n

With participation from Equinor, Aker BP, Petoro and TotalEnergies, the project is awaiting government approval under the current development and operation plan.<\/p>\n\n
