A technical trial aimed at recycling boil-off gas<\/strong>(BOG<\/em>) generated during the construction of LNG-powered ships took place at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries<\/strong> ‘ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. <\/p>\n\n

The first demonstration of boil-off gas recycling<\/h2>\n\n

This project involved HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering<\/strong>, Dongwha Newtech, Korean Register<\/strong>(KR<\/em>) and a Liberian flagged company. The initiative addresses the restrictions imposed by international ports, which require the use of alternative shore power(AMP<\/em>) systems for ships at anchor. <\/p>\n\n

When the LNG stored<\/strong> in the tanks evaporates due to the increase in internal pressure<\/strong>, it generates a gas that should mainly be burned or released into the atmosphere. With this technology, it is captured and converted into an energy source for urban use. This process is a viable alternative to forced flaring, which is facing increasing regulatory restrictions. <\/p>\n\n

The tests carried out showed that the evaporated gas, which exceeds 50 tons per vessel during construction, can be channeled and treated thanks to specialized compressors developed by Dongwha Newtech<\/strong>. For this purpose, KR <\/strong>supervised the design, testing and validation stages of the entire process. <\/p>\n\n

The heads of the companies involved emphasized the strategic value of this innovation. From HD Hyundai<\/a><\/strong> highlighted that this is the world’s first application of BOG recycling<\/strong> during shipbuilding. The technology minimizes greenhouse gas emissions and anticipates compliance with future international regulations. <\/p>\n\n

KR <\/strong>reaffirmed its commitment to the certification of technologies that promote maritime efficiency and sustainability. The demonstration shows progress towards the integral use of resources<\/strong> in shipbuilding, with direct benefits for the port environment. <\/p>\n\n

The use of BOG as a recycled energy resource could be consolidated as a standard, especially when the use of AMP <\/strong>becomes mandatory on a global scale.<\/p>\n\n
