The port of Rotterdam witnessed the official christening of the Boreas, Van Oord’s new offshore wind vessel<\/strong>, which is already emerging as the largest and most sustainable in the sector. The ceremony, presided over by Mayor Carola Schouten, brought together employees and guests around this key commitment to decarbonization. <\/p>\n\n

An Offshore Wind Vessel Designed for Giant Turbines<\/h2>\n\n

Designed specifically for the assembly of foundations and large offshore turbines<\/a><\/strong>, the Boreas stands out for its crane with a 155-meter high boom and a load capacity of more than 3,000 tons. <\/p>\n\n

With a length of 175 meters, it can install offshore wind turbines of more than 20 megawatts<\/strong>, making it a strategic asset in the face of growing demand for clean offshore generation.<\/p>\n\n

The Boreas operates with dual-fuel engines<\/a><\/strong> capable of using methanol, which reduces its carbon footprint by more than 78%. This is complemented by selective catalytic reduction systems to minimize nitrogen oxide emissions and a 6,000 kWh battery that optimizes energy consumption. <\/p>\n\n

After its christening, the Boreas is heading towards the Nordseecluster<\/a><\/strong> offshore wind complex in the German North Sea. There it will participate in the installation of 104 monopiles and scour protection measures. This 1.6 gigawatt energy cluster, developed by RWE<\/a><\/strong> and Norges Bank Investment Management, will provide renewable electricity for 1.6 million homes. <\/p>\n\n

Validated Climate Commitment<\/h2>\n\n

During the event, Van Oord announced that it has become the first maritime contractor with emission reduction targets<\/a><\/strong> validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company plans to align its fleet with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and accelerate its transition to net zero emissions through innovation and sector collaboration. <\/p>\n\n
