This agreement positions the company as a key supplier in the deployment of advanced technology for seabed monitoring.

The project is being developed in the Endurance saline aquifer, located 145 kilometers off the coast of Teesside, where CO₂ captured from the Teesside and Humber industrial clusters, known as the East Coast Cluster, will be stored. This infrastructure is essential for the decarbonization of the most emitting areas of the country.

A partnership for carbon neutrality

NEP, a company formed by BP, Equinor and TotalEnergies, is in charge of developing and operating the infrastructure that will transport the CO₂ to its geological containment. Its objective is to guarantee the safe containment of the gas in subway formations and move towards zero net emissions.

As part of the contract, Sonardyne will supply seabed lander modules equipped with its Edge system for data processing, acoustic communication and energy autonomy. These devices will enable long-term data collection without the need for physical retrieval, thanks to underwater wireless transmission.

Subsea modules with sensors for continuous monitoring

Each unit will integrate the Origin 600 ADCPa Wavefront passive sonar system and third-party sensors. This combination is capable of detecting alterations in water composition, providing a comprehensive picture of environmental behavior prior to the initiation of the CO₂ storage in 2028.

Installation of the systems is scheduled for the summer of 2026 and will extend for two years in the baseline phase. This phase is critical to establish baseline conditions and meet regulatory and operational safety requirements.

Commitment to environmental monitoring at CCS

Stephen Auld, business development manager for custom projects at Sonardyne, noted that “participating in this pioneering project reaffirms our expertise in environmental subsea technology”. Sarah Buchanan, subsurface manager at BP, noted that “constant monitoring is vital to public confidence and the effectiveness of safe storage”.

This contract consolidates Sonardyne as a strategic partner in the deployment of solutions that underpin industrial decarbonization in the UK and reinforces confidence in the process of CO₂ capture and confinement in marine environments.

Follow us on social networks and don’t miss any of our publications!

YouTube LinkedIn Facebook Instagram X (Twitter) TikTok

Source and photo: Sonardyne

Underwater modules will collect environmental data for two years without the need for physical retrieval

[13026,13048

post-263714","noticias","type-noticias","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria_noticias-energy","categoria_noticias-maritime
["GET
