{"id":251593,"date":"2025-04-29T17:35:59","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T21:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/fau-engineers-increase-wood-strength-with-eco-friendly-nano-iron\/"},"modified":"2025-04-29T17:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-29T21:39:15","slug":"fau-engineers-increase-wood-strength-with-eco-friendly-nano-iron","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/fau-engineers-increase-wood-strength-with-eco-friendly-nano-iron\/","title":{"rendered":"FAU engineers increase wood strength with eco-friendly nano-iron"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A group of scientists from <strong>Florida Atlantic University<\/strong><em>(FAU<\/em>), in collaboration with the <strong>University of Miami<\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/oak-ridge-national-laboratory-achieves-3d-printing-of-nuclear-components\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"222077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oak Ridge National Laboratory<\/a><\/strong>has developed a stronger wood using a nano-scale iron composite.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The hardness of wood with ecological nano-iron<\/h2>\n\n<p>The researchers focused on <strong>red oak<\/strong>, a North American hardwood. By performing a simple reaction between <strong>ferric nitrate<\/strong> and <strong>potassium hydroxide<\/strong>, they created <em>ferrihydrite<\/em>, a naturally occurring mineral that was inserted directly into the cell walls of the wood. <\/p>\n\n<p>The research team used techniques such as <strong>atomic force microscopy<\/strong><em>(AFM<\/em>) and <strong>nanoindentation <\/strong>to analyze the behavior of the treated wood. The tests demonstrated an increase in cellular stiffness, without impairing the integrity of the material on a macro scale. <\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Given the global volume of <strong>wood production<\/strong>, this type of <strong>chemical treatment<\/strong> could allow wood to be used in more demanding architectural structures while remaining environmentally friendly. The <strong>UAF <\/strong>has expressed its commitment to the development of advanced plant-based, low-carbon materials. <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>By looking at wood at different levels, from the microscopic structures within the cell walls to the complete piece of wood, we were able to learn more about how to chemically enhance natural materials for real-world use.<\/p>\n<cite>Dr. Vivian Merk, lead author and professor in FAU&#8217;s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>This project involved experts in <strong>mechanical engineering<\/strong>, <strong>chemistry <\/strong>and <strong>advanced microscopy<\/strong>.
