By using <em>asphaltenes<\/em> and <em>resins<\/em> as raw materials, the research team has developed a more efficient spinning process with lower energy consumption and higher carbonization yield. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More accessible carbon fiber production<\/h2>\n\n<p>Currently, carbon fiber production relies on <strong>polyacrylonitrile<\/strong> ( <em>PAN<\/em> ), an expensive precursor that accounts for up to 50% of total manufacturing costs. Using <strong>petroleum waste<\/strong> as an alternative reduces raw material costs and increases process efficiency. <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This led us to hypothesize that blending asphaltenes with resins could create a synergistic feedstock for carbon fiber production.<\/p>\n<cite>Edwin Guevara Romero, researcher in Mani Sarathy&#8217;s laboratory.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The resulting fibers possess mechanical characteristics similar to isotropic fibers used in industrial applications. Furthermore, they demonstrated adequate tensile strength for sectors such as <strong>automotive<\/strong> , <strong>wind energy<\/strong> , and even <strong>biomedical devices<\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n<p>By <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/titanium-and-carbon-fiber-the-disruptive-duo-of-modern-metallurgy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"articulo\" data-id=\"86761\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">producing carbon fibers<\/a><\/strong> , the process improves the handling of the remaining oil.
