However, their complex chemistry has made effective monitoring difficult. As interest in these reactors grows due to their safety and energy efficiency, the need for new monitoring technologies becomes even more crucial.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The ORNL research team <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/jacs.4c13684\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/jacs.4c13684\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has used LIBS<\/a> to measure elements and identify isotopes<\/strong> in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/molten-salt-based-energy-accumulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/acumulador-de-energia-basado-sales-fundidas\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">molten salts<\/a><\/strong> for the first time. In this process, a high-energy laser creates a plasma that emits light, which is then analyzed to detect the elements present in the molten salt.   <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>This technique allows results to be obtained in less than a second<\/strong> , making it an invaluable tool for real-time monitoring in nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving the safety and efficiency of nuclear reactors<\/h2>\n\n<p>The use of LIBS has made it possible to identify the chemical composition of molten salts and analyze the gas diffusion rate within the reactor. This analysis is essential for understanding how gases propagate and dissolve in the salt, which directly affects reactor efficiency and operational safety. <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This method not only provides an elemental fingerprint of the samples, but also helps to monitor reactors more effectively.  <\/p>\n<cite>Explained Hunter Andrews, senior scientist at ORNL<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>The technique is able to <strong>differentiate between hydrogen and water in the reactor gases<\/strong> , providing accurate data on the dissolution of the gases in the molten salt.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The future of advanced nuclear energy<\/h2>\n\n<p>This breakthrough is just the beginning.
