{"id":227965,"date":"2025-02-10T15:48:10","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T19:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/rolls-royce-boosts-recycling-with-tornado-2-tempest-project\/"},"modified":"2025-02-10T16:21:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T20:21:29","slug":"rolls-royce-boosts-recycling-with-tornado-2-tempest-project","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/rolls-royce-boosts-recycling-with-tornado-2-tempest-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolls-Royce boosts recycling with Tornado 2 Tempest project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Rolls-Royce<\/strong> is to launch an innovative defence recycling programme with the <strong>Tornado 2 Tempest project<\/strong> , an initiative that converts obsolete components of the <strong>Royal Air Force<\/strong> ( <em>RAF<\/em> ) Tornado into metal powder to manufacture new parts using 3D printing.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tornado 2 Tempest project: From waste to innovation<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>Orpheus engine<\/strong> , part of the UK&#8217;s <strong>Future Combat Air System<\/strong> ( <em>FCAS<\/em> ) programme, has been the first to benefit from this technology, demonstrating its viability for the next generation of fighter aircraft, including the <strong>Tempest platform<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n<p>The project is led by <strong>Defence Equipment and Support<\/strong> ( <em>DE&amp;S<\/em> ) and the <strong>UK Ministry of Defence<\/strong> <em>(MOD)<\/em> , identifying that many disused assets contain <strong>strategic metals<\/strong> such as titanium, aluminium and high-grade steel.<\/p>\n\n<p>Through <strong>an atomization process<\/strong> , components such as compressor blades have been transformed into raw material, allowing the 3D printing of new parts, including a <strong>front cone<\/strong> and <strong>compressor blades<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n<p>Once the recycled parts were manufactured, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/rolls-royce-to-develop-hydrogen-electrolyzers\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"42227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rolls-Royce<\/a><\/strong> carried out tests on an <strong>Orpheus engine<\/strong> , validating its performance and safety. Furthermore, the results confirm that this methodology is effective, and can be applied to <strong>other propulsion systems in defence<\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>At Rolls-Royce, we continue to be a leader in circular economy practices and innovative digital enablers to support our steps towards a lower carbon and digitally enabled business.
