With a carrying capacity of 8,000 tonnes of CO\u2082, the 130-metre vessel is set to begin operations in 2024. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the Northern Pioneer in European decarbonisation<\/h2>\n\n<p>The ship will play a key role in the safe transport of captured CO\u2082 from industrial sites in Europe to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in \u00d8ygarden, Norway. From there, the CO\u2082 <strong>will be permanently stored 2,600 metres below the seabed<\/strong> . This operation is part of the Longship project, which was initiated by the Norwegian Parliament in 2019.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Northern Lights JV, a partnership between Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell, is the first company to offer commercial <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/italy-carbon-capture-and-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"105171\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carbon capture and storage<\/a><\/strong> (CCS) services. With agreements already signed with Yara (Netherlands) and \u00d8rsted (Denmark), the company is consolidating a reliable transport and storage network to support Europe\u2019s decarbonisation goals. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technical details and next steps<\/h2>\n\n<p>The \u201cNorthern Pioneer\u201d is the first of four sister vessels specially designed for the transport of liquefied CO\u2082. Registered in Norway and managed by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd.
