This innovative thermal storage system promises to transform district heating by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/iberdrola-and-gres-panaria-portugal-sign-a-renewable-energy-supply-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"209725\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">using clean, renewable energy<\/a><\/strong> .   <\/p>\n\n<p>Now, its efficiency will be taken to the next level thanks to an artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution provided by Elisa, a leading company in telecommunications and digital services.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI to optimize sand battery and its thermal storage<\/h2>\n\n<p>The AI system developed by Elisa will automatically manage battery charging, adjusting in real time to fluctuations in the electricity market. Source: Elisa <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The sand battery, developed by Polar Night Energy, has the capacity to store heat generated by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/superhot-rocks-could-generate-renewable-electricity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"213608\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable electricity<\/a><\/strong> and release it on demand. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yrityksille.elisa.fi\/ideat\/elisa-optimoi-maailman-suurinta-hiekka-akkua-puhtaampaa-kaukolampoa-ja-taloudellisia-hyotyja\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/yrityksille.elisa.fi\/ideat\/elisa-optimoi-maailman-suurinta-hiekka-akkua-puhtaampaa-kaukolampoa-ja-taloudellisia-hyotyja\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elisa\u2019s technology<\/a><\/strong> <strong>will enable this energy to be flexibly traded<\/strong> on electricity reserve markets managed by Fingrid, Finland\u2019s transmission system operator. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emission reduction and economic benefits<\/h2>\n\n<p>The implementation of this solution will enable more than 50% of district heating in Pornainen to come from electricity, reducing emissions by 70%. It is estimated that this <strong>will prevent the emission of approximately 160 tonnes of CO2 annually<\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n<p>From Elisa, Jukka-Pekka Salmenkaita, Vice President of AI, has highlighted that energy flexibility is key for the future of the sector, and AI allows <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/thermal-storage-blocks-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"95101\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thermal storage<\/a><\/strong> companies to actively participate in the electricity market, benefiting both economically and environmentally.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A replicable model for the future<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/finnish-engineers-installed-the-first-sand-battery-that-stores-green-energy\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"43700\">sand battery<\/a><\/strong> is an example of how technological innovation can improve energy efficiency and contribute to the decarbonisation of the sector.
