Germany marks a breakthrough in sustainable transport with the delivery of its first fully electric ferry<\/a><\/strong> . Damen Shipyards has completed construction of the electric catamaran E-Kat, designed to operate in the East Frisian Wadden Sea. <\/p>\n\n

Design and technology of the E-Kat electric catamaran<\/h2>\n\n

The 32-metre long ferry can carry 150 passengers and is designed to cover the route between Norddeich and Norderney in just 30 minutes<\/strong> . Its two 600 kW electric motors, powered by solar<\/a><\/strong> -charged batteries, ensure emission-free operation. In addition, its aluminium structure significantly reduces weight, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 12 knots. <\/p>\n\n

To adapt to the shallow waters of the Wadden Sea, the E-Kat incorporates a double-hull design that minimises its draft to just 1.2 metres. It also features panoramic windows that provide passengers with exceptional views of this UNESCO-protected ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n

Commitment to sustainability<\/h2>\n\n

AG Reederei Norden-Frisia<\/a><\/strong> , the ferry operator, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. The energy that powers the E-Kat\u2019s batteries comes from solar panels<\/a><\/strong> installed on land, making its operation carbon neutral. This project is part of a broader effort to achieve zero emissions in its maritime operations. <\/p>\n\n
