Major U.S. utilities have formed a coalition to accelerate the deployment of GE Vernova\u2019s BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR)<\/strong> . Led by the Tennessee Energy Agency (TVA), the initiative seeks $800 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the SMR Generation III+ program. <\/p>\n\n

A strategic alliance for a clean future<\/h2>\n\n

The coalition includes leading players such as Bechtel, BWX Technologies, Duke Energy, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), among others. The collaboration also includes participation from the state of Tennessee and developers of advanced nuclear technologies<\/a><\/strong> . The common goal is to accelerate the deployment of cleaner, more sustainable energy technologies, with the BWRX-300 as the centerpiece. <\/p>\n\n

The BWRX-300<\/a><\/strong> is a tenth-generation boiling water reactor, designed to reduce construction and operating costs through the use of certified fuels, plant design simplifications and proven components. It also employs passive and natural cooling systems to ensure high safety standards. <\/p>\n\n

Plans for the near future with the BWRX-300<\/h2>\n\n

TVA has selected the Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the potential deployment of the first BWRX-300 in the United States. If DOE funding is approved, construction could begin within two years<\/strong> , with a target of commercial operation in 2033. <\/p>\n\n

Duke Energy has also announced its intention to invest in design and licensing activities for this technology. American Electric Power has identified the small modular reactor<\/a><\/strong> as a viable option for its Indiana plant, subject to DOE approval. <\/p>\n\n

A global impact<\/h2>\n\n

The BWRX-300 is not only gaining traction in the United States. In Canada, Ontario Power Generation is already moving forward with the construction of the first reactor at the Darlington site, with operations planned for 2029. This cross-border collaboration reinforces confidence in SMR technology<\/a><\/strong> as a key solution for the global energy transition. <\/p>\n\n

Scott Strazik, CEO of GE Vernova, emphasized the importance of nuclear power to achieving a cleaner, safer future. \u201c We look forward to working with TVA and our partners to accelerate the deployment of SMRs in the United States<\/em> ,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

Its ability to produce heat and steam positions it as a strategic option for industrial applications, such as clean hydrogen production<\/a><\/strong> and direct carbon capture from air<\/a><\/strong> .
