This ambitious project, led by the Swedish company SKB (Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company), reinforces Sweden&#8217;s commitment to sustainability and long-term energy security. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A design thought for the future<\/h2>\n\n<p>The repository will be located 500 metres underground in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/skb.com\/future-projects\/the-spent-fuel-repository\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/skb.com\/future-projects\/the-spent-fuel-repository\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1.9 billion-year-old rock<\/a><\/strong> . With a planned capacity to store <strong>12,000 tonnes of nuclear fuel in 6,000 copper containers<\/strong> , the facility will ensure the isolation of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/decommissioning-of-nuclear-power-plants\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"169663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly radioactive waste<\/a><\/strong> for thousands of years. Source: SKB <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>During the groundbreaking ceremony, Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari stressed the importance of the project as an essential step towards reducing the risks associated with handling radioactive waste. Initial construction includes preparatory works such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/robot-anymal-autonomous-inspection-deposit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"142807\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">storage plants<\/a><\/strong> , water treatment and controlled clearing of forested areas. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges and criticisms<\/strong> for the construction of the geological repository<\/h2>\n\n<p>Although the project is being hailed as an innovative solution, it is not without its challenges. Environmental groups have raised concerns about the risk of groundwater contamination, while some researchers point to potential <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/solution-for-corrosion-in-biogas-plants\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"110017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corrosion problems<\/a><\/strong> in the storage containers.
